The University of London undertook a refurbishment of Macmillan Hall to address ongoing issues with an outdated and difficult-to-maintain lighting installation. Working with contractor Nicholls Projects, Dextra Lighting was appointed to design and supply a replacement system that would improve light quality, simplify maintenance and give users reliable control over colour temperature.

The existing lighting consisted of large fluorescent luminaires, each containing eight lamps, split between warm white and cool white tubes. In theory, this allowed colour temperature selection by switching lamps, but over time, incorrect tubes were fitted and replacements became increasingly hard to source. This resulted in inconsistent colour temperatures across the space and a noticeable decline in lighting performance.

Dextra replaced the obsolete fluorescent system with a modern LED solution offering fully correlated colour temperature control. The impressive new installation offers simple adjustment of colour temperature, eliminates costly lamp changes, reduces maintenance issues and restores consistency across the hall. The upgrade has given the University greater flexibility, improved visual comfort and a future-proof lighting system that is easier to manage.
